Ten Years of Tradition, A New Mountain Home

Jeff Oliver founded Highland Expedition Outfitters in 2013, bringing both his experience from Airstream Travel Trailers and his love for the outdoors to create something special. Just outside the Great Smoky Mountains, Jeff built HEO into a name synonymous with quality aluminum expedition trailers.

For nearly a decade, Jeff and his wife, Kate, poured their hearts into building the lightest and most capable expedition trailers on the market. Their commitment to quality, and to the overland community in general, created a devoted following of satisfied owners across North America.

The Next Chapter

When Jeff and Kate decided to retire in 2023, the story could have ended there. Instead, it found new life in the Rocky Mountains through an unexpected turn of events…

Meet Tad (and Gracie)

I’m Tad.  I’m a mountain biker, off-roader, camper and former lawyer.  During COVID, I entered a couple of multi-day MTB races, and I bought a roof top tent for my Jeep so I could camp out, rather than having to get a hotel room.  But after my second experience of getting up before dawn to break camp so I could drive myself to the start line, only to return after a grueling day in the saddle to the joy of setting up camp again – and with the promise of doing it all over again the next day – I realized that a trailer was the far better way to go.

I found HEO and Jeff right away, but I chose to go with a cheaper (in both senses of the word, it turns out…) local DIY option that I found on Craigslist.   Well, one folded frame, one sheared axle spindle, and one small claims court battle later, I returned to Jeff and HEO, only to learn that he and Kate were retiring and shutting down the business.  Recognizing the opportunity immediately, I talked Jeff into selling the company to me, and I relocated it to Colorado.  Put me in front of a campfire with a beer or bourbon in my hand, and I’ll happily tell you the whole story with all the gory details!

Now operating from Denver, Colorado, HEO maintains the same unwavering standards that made these trailers legendary. Every Trail HErO still features the signature all-aluminum design and construction. Our small team builds each trailer by hand with the same attention to detail that Jeff instilled in the brand, now set against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.

From Tennessee to Colorado, the spirit of innovation and quality lives on at HEO. The ownership and location may have changed, but the commitment to building the finest expedition trailers in North America remains as strong as ever.
