10 Tips for Choosing the Right Lightweight Adventure Trailer
What to look for—and why HEO gets it right
There’s no shortage of gear in the overland world. But when it comes to finding the right lightweight adventure trailer for your adventures, what really matters? Here’s what we’ve learned the hard way (and are now proud to build the right way).
1. Weight Matters More Than You Think
My first trailer was a steel DIY job (someone else’s DIY, to be clear). At over 1,600 lbs dry, it was technically fine for my Jeep’s 3,500 lb towing capacity—but it felt anything but fine.
MPG took a nosedive, hills became a full-body workout, and navigating technical terrain with a near-ton behind me? Not ideal.
👉 HEO’s Trail HErO 1 clocks in at just 650 lbs. Trail HErO 2? Only 750 lbs. That means easy towing for Subarus, Jeeps, and small pickups—and way more miles per gallon and smiles per gallon.
2. Hitch Compatibility = Flexibility
If your rig goes off-road, a 3-axis Lock ’N Roll hitch is worth every penny. It allows the trailer to articulate independently of your vehicle—no binding, no snapping, no white-knuckle turns. It’s not just a nice-to-have. It’s a don’t-break-your-hitch kind of must-have.
3. Independent Suspension
A trailer bouncing on a solid axle is basically a gear blender. Independent suspension, tuned to your rig’s specs, smooths the ride and keeps your trailer tracking safely through rough terrain. Your cooler (and your sanity) will thank you.
4. Ground Clearance Is Key
You don’t need rock-crawling clearance to enjoy a great campsite—but if you’re even thinking about getting off-grid, you’ll appreciate not dragging your trailer through ruts, roots, and rocks. HEO trailers offer serious clearance for serious adventure.
5. Storage That Works—Not Fights You
We’ve all had that moment: digging through your gear for a spatula, knowing it’s in the last bin you check. Smart storage with compartmentalized options and external tie-downs means less digging and more doing.
Plus, 36.4 cubic feet of storage (Trail HErO1) or 44 cubic feet (Trail HErO2) means you never have to leave gear (or your favorite chair) behind.
6. Stability at Camp
Nobody wants to roll every time their partner turns over in the rooftop tent. Stabilizer legs get the trailer off its tires and onto a solid, level base. It’s one of those underrated details that makes camp feel like camp—not a wobbly afterthought.
7. Room to Grow
The perfect setup today might not be the perfect setup in two years. Look for trailers that are expandable and modular—ones that grow with you. At HEO, we’re working toward backward-compatible upgrades, so early adopters don’t get left behind.
8. Weatherproof + Sleep-Ready
Bring a good tent (our rooftop tent platform is rock solid) and a mattress that won’t make you miss your bed. Don’t settle for soggy zippers and stiff necks. Get something that helps you wake up ready to explore.

9. Keep Your Bikes with Your Rig
We get asked a lot about mounting bikes to the trailer. Our advice? Keep them on your tow rig. That way, you can leave your trailer at camp and still chase singletrack or find your next trailhead without tearing camp down.
10. Nice-to-Haves That Make All the Difference
